Brahms Requiem

Saturday, April 8 at 5:00 pm in the Church
The St. John the Divine Chorale, the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, and soloists lead us into Holy Week with a performance of Brahms Requiem. This concert is free of charge, and childcare is provided.

About the St. John’s Chorale

A semi-professional choir, the St. John’s Chorale offers music from the heart of the rich Anglican choral tradition each Sunday at St. John the Divine’s 9:00 & 11:00 am services. Led by Steven A. Newberry, this group is composed of dedicated professional singers and volunteers alike whose purpose is to Change Lives for God in Christ through their offering of music.

About The River Oaks Chamber Orchestra

The River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (ROCO) is a 40-piece professional chamber orchestra that was founded in 2005 by Alecia Lawyer. A Juilliard-trained musician with an eclectic background as a performer, recording artist, adjunct professor and radio host, Lawyer had a vision to re-imagine the orchestral experience for both audience and musicians. The result is ROCO: an orchestra of all-star musicians, distinguished conductors and contemporary composers who come together from all over the world to present unexpected classics, original compositions and delightful performances that dissolve the barriers between audience and orchestra.

Service and Stripping of the Altar: 7:00 pm in the Church
Commemorate Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples in this very moving service. Music will be offered by the Children and Youth Choirs. At the close of the service, we prepare for Good Friday by ceremonially removing all ornamentation from the church and raising a black-draped cross behind the altar.

Children’s Foot Washing Service: 7:00 pm in the Chapel
Children are invited to a special foot washing service in the Chapel while their families attend the Maundy Thursday service. Please drop off your children, ages 3 and up, in the chapel beginning at 6:45 pm. Children will rejoin their parents in the church at the peace for Communion and the stripping of the altar. Nursery will be available for younger children and babies in room 104.

3:00 – 5:00 pm
Your whole family can walk with Jesus on the road to the cross in this self-guided Stations of the Cross on the church grounds. Travel together through the milestone moments of Jesus’ journey from his arrest to his entombment, pausing along the way to reflect and pray. A special, family-friendly booklet will be provided to guide you and help you talk through the meaning of these events with your children. You will take away an item from each Station that represents the particular moment in the story. Together with the booklet, this collection of items will create a lasting reminder of the Passion story for your children.
